Why Do a Yoga Retreat in Mexico?
Mexico is an ideal location for a yoga vacation.
Besides being super easy to reach from the USA or Canada, yoga retreats and yoga teacher training programs in beautiful Mexico give you ample opportunity to escape from the daily grind, connect with nature, and recenter yourself.
Below are some of the top reasons to plan to visit Mexico for your next yoga getaway.
Weather
Mexico is known for its warm and sunny climate, which is perfect for practicing yoga.
While the exact temperatures will vary based on the specific region you travel to, you can expect warm weather throughout the year.
To give you an example, even in December, the temperature in Cancun typically ranges between 69 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit.
Beaches and Scenery
Gorgeous scenery abounds in Mexico.
If you love the beach, you’ll absolutely be glad that you chose Mexico for your wellness retreat. There are over 6,000 miles of coastline in the country, with several idyllic beaches waiting for you.
If you’ve only been to United States beaches, prepare to be amazed by the pretty blue and turquoise water, too!
Culture and History
Mexico has a rich and unique history.
There are many different areas in the country where you can witness this history and explore ancient sights.
The most famous, perhaps, is the Chichén Itzá ruins from the ancient Mayans.
Spiritual Vortexes
Mexico is also home to several spiritual sites, which can make your yoga retreat all the more special and fulfilling.
These sites are found along the ruins of old civilizations and present the opportunity to connect with ancient beings and benefit from their spiritual energy.
Some of the most famous spiritual vortexes in Mexico include Chichén Itzá, Tepoztlán, Teotihuacan, and Mayapan.
Delicious Food
As you’re thinking about yoga retreats in Mexico, don’t forget about all the delicious food that awaits.
If you like Mexican food, just wait until you try the real, authentic dishes. From tamales, tacos, enchiladas, and more, Mexican food is so tasty.
Best Places to Go on a Yoga Holiday in Mexico
One of the best things about planning a yoga holiday in Mexico is that there are a lot of great locations to choose from.
From warm and tropical yoga retreats in Cancun to Tulum retreats where you’re surrounded by Mayan history as well as gorgeous beaches, there is something for everyone in Mexico.
Some of my favorite Mexican destinations for a yoga retreat include Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Puerto Escondido.
Best Time to Go on a Mexico Yoga Retreat
The best time to plan your retreat in Mexico can vary based on your specific destination and your preferences.
Generally speaking, between March and May or September and October are seen as the best times to plan a Mexico retreat. During these months, the temperatures will still be warm, but not sweltering hot.
If you don’t mind the heat, then you can plan your retreat in the summer. However, just be prepared for more crowds. June, July, and August are typically busier months with more tourists.
Similarly, the winter holidays around Christmas and New Year’s also bring more tourists to the country. Avoiding these months, if you’re looking for the opportunity to do some sightseeing before or after your retreat, might be a good idea.

Attending a Yoga Retreat in Mexico? Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!
As with any other kind of physical activity, joining a yoga retreat is not without its risks. While yoga is generally safe, accidents and injuries can happen anywhere and, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to be prepared for the worst, especially when you’re in a foreign country.
That’s why travel insurance is so important and you should never leave home without it! I use and recommend SafetyWing travel medical insurance for travelers, remote workers, and nomads.
They cover overseas medical assistance in case of accident or illness, a wide range of sports and activities including yoga, travel delay or interruption, lost checked luggage, emergency medical or political evacuation, natural disasters, and personal liability, at very competitive prices.
