Known for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and sacred significance, Jaco Island is a dream destination for travelers seeking serenity and natural beauty.
I spent five months living and traveling across East Timor in 2023/2024, and my visit to Jaco Island was one of the most memorable highlights of my journey.

Jaco Island: A Sacred Paradise
Jaco Island, or Ilha de Jaco, is not just a visual wonder – it’s a place of profound cultural importance. The island is considered sacred by the local Fataluku people, who believe it to be the dwelling place of ancestral spirits.
Out of respect for these beliefs, no one is allowed to set foot on the island overnight. Visitors can explore its shores during the day but must leave before sunset, ensuring the sanctity of this paradise is preserved.
What makes Jaco truly special is its untouched beauty. The island is part of the Nino Konis Santana National Park, a protected area known for its biodiversity.
As you step onto its powdery white sands, you’ll be greeted by crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, vibrant coral reefs perfect for snorkeling, and a tranquil atmosphere that makes you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
How to Get to Jaco Island from Dili
Reaching Jaco Island is no small feat, but the journey is half the adventure.
From Dili, the capital of East Timor, you’ll need to travel approximately 230 kilometers east to Tutuala, the closest village to the island. This may not sound far, but the rugged roads and challenging terrain can turn the drive into a 5- to 6-hour journey.
Road Trip Itinerary
Dili – Manatuto – Baucau (Approx. 3 Hours)
I drove with a local friend, and we left Dili around noon. I recommend you start your journey early in the morning though to make the most of the daylight, especially if you’re traveling solo.
Our first stop was Manatuto for lunch. As you drive through this coastal town, you’ll see several roadside stalls serving freshly grilled local fish with rice, making for a delicious local meal.
After lunch, we continued to Baucau, Timor-Leste’s second-largest city.
If you have the time, explore Baucau’s colonial charm, visit its market for fresh fruits or snacks, and take in the beautiful views from the Baucau Pousada. This is another great spot to stretch your legs and grab a quick bite.
Baucau – Tutuala – Valu Beach (Approx. 3 Hours)
The final leg of the journey is the most rugged, with narrow, bumpy roads winding up to Tutuala village. Renting a 4WD is essential for this stretch, especially during the rainy season.
Once you arrive in Tutuala or Valu Beach, check into your accommodation and rest for the night before heading to Jaco Island the next day.
We decided to drive to Valu Beach and spend the night there to be able to take the boat trip to Jaco early in the morning and make the most of our time on the island.
From Valu Beach, local fishermen offer boat rides across the channel to Jaco Island. The ride is short – about 10 minutes – but provides stunning views of the turquoise waters and the pristine coastline.
When you arrive on the island, make sure to arrange with the local fishermen what time they will pick you back up.
We spent the morning enjoying Jaco Island and drove back to Dili in the afternoon. But you can choose to spend a second night in Tutuala or Valu Beach for a more relaxing experience.

Tips for the Journey
- Rent a 4WD: The roads from Dili to Tutuala are rough, with long stretches of dirt tracks and potholes. A sturdy 4WD vehicle is essential for navigating these conditions safely.
- Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a basic first aid kit. Fuel stations are scarce along the way, so fill up your tank in Dili or Baucau.
- Take Breaks: The journey can be exhausting, so take breaks to rest and appreciate the stunning landscapes of East Timor.
- Start Early: Timor-Leste’s roads are challenging, and driving after dark is not the most recommended due to poor lighting and uneven terrain.
Where to Stay to Visit Jaco Island
While Jaco Island itself doesn’t offer accommodation, you’ll find several options nearby in Tutuala and on Valu Beach, the jumping-off point for the island.
Valu Sere Beach Bungalows
I stayed at Valu Sere Beach Bungalows (Guest House Valu on Google Maps), located right on Valu Beach. This community-run guesthouse offers simple but comfortable accommodations, perfect for adventurous travelers seeking a rustic experience.
My room was basic, featuring a fan and a shared bathroom with a squat toilet and cold water – a true back-to-basics setup.
However, what stood out to me about Valu Sere guesthouse was the warm hospitality. We arrived after dark and unannounced, and the hosts were incredibly accommodating, preparing dinner upon request and breakfast in the morning.

Pousada Lautem
If you prefer a more comfortable stay, consider Pousada Lautem, located in the center of Tutuala village.
This charming guesthouse offers a bit more in terms of amenities while still providing easy access to Jaco Island. It’s a great option for those who want to experience the region without sacrificing comfort.
Disconnecting to Reconnect
One of the unique aspects of staying near Jaco Island was the opportunity to unplug completely.
On Valu Beach, there’s no internet or phone connection between 10 pm and 8 am, which can be a refreshing change for those accustomed to being constantly connected, myself included.
Without digital distractions, you can fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area. Watch the sunset on the beach, listen to the sounds of the ocean, or spend your evenings stargazing in the unpolluted skies.
For me personally, it was a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.
What to Do on Jaco Island
Although Jaco Island is relatively small and has no tourist facilities, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy during your visit.
Snorkeling and Swimming
The waters surrounding Jaco Island are a haven for marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. Bring your own gear to explore the vibrant coral reefs and encounter colorful fish in their natural habitat.
Swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the island is equally delightful and offers a perfect way to cool off.
Hiking and Exploring
While the island itself doesn’t have marked trails, its pristine beaches and lush vegetation are perfect for a stroll.
Respect the local customs by staying on the beach and avoiding areas considered sacred.
Relaxation
For those seeking tranquility, Jaco Island is the ideal place to unwind. Lay back on the soft sands, soak up the sun, and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature.

- Bring Cash: There are no ATMs in Tutuala or Valu Beach, so ensure you have enough cash for accommodation, meals, and the boat ride to Jaco.
- Pack Light: If you’re staying in basic accommodations like Valu Sere Guesthouse, pack essentials such as a flashlight, insect repellent, and toiletries.
- Be Aware of Saltwater Crocodiles: Saltwater crocodiles inhabit many coastal areas in East Timor, including those near Jaco Island. While attacks are rare, it’s crucial to stay vigilant. Avoid swimming far from the shore or in areas where locals advise against it and always ask for guidance from your hosts or local fishermen.
- Plan Ahead: Timor-Leste is still developing as a travel destination, so it’s important to plan your trip carefully. Confirm your accommodation and transportation arrangements in advance to avoid any last-minute surprises.
