What is a Yoga Bolster?
A yoga bolster is a special firm pillow used to provide support for individuals doing yoga. People may choose to use a bolster for yoga for a variety of different reasons.
One use for a bolster is to make it easier and more comfortable to perform different yoga stretches and positions. The bolster can provide a layer of padding between your body and the hard floor or your yoga mat, which can keep you more comfortable as you engage in different yoga poses.
Keeping your body comfortable as you perform different poses is important because it can allow fully reap all of the relaxing benefits associated with doing yoga.
On the other hand, some yoga poses can be challenging to perform. Doing yoga with a bolster provides support for your body and can be a great help in getting into the correct position. And, again, when you’re able to achieve the proper positions, you will be more likely to reap the full benefits of yoga.
Bolsters are often used for restorative or yin yoga, prenatal yoga, or Iyengar-based yoga. However, you may see them used during other class types as well.
If your yoga instructor has been using bolsters during class time or if you’d like to improve your home practice, purchasing a yoga bolster is definitely a good idea.
Different Types of Yoga Bolsters
While all yoga bolsters are designed to provide additional support for a variety of yoga poses, there are different styles and variations to consider.
There are four main types of bolsters: round bolsters, rectangular bolsters, meditation bolster pillows, and pranayama bolsters.
Round Yoga Bolster
Round yoga bolsters are shaped like a cylinder. Most round bolsters are longer and heavier than standard rectangular bolsters and are often used by more advanced yogis.
Many people like to place a yoga round bolster under their back to raise their spines and let their shoulders and arms hang down for different positions. Round bolsters can also help provide support and comfort when they are placed under the knees.
Some people also use round bolsters when performing seated poses. However, this is probably a better idea for more balanced and experienced individuals since the round design can make you feel less stable.
Rectangular Yoga Bolster
Rectangular yoga bolsters are one of the most versatile options. These bolsters are wide and relatively flat, making them great for providing support for your back.
Their design allows them to be placed flat on the ground to offer a little support/lift for your body, or to be placed on the edge where they will raise your body off the ground even more.
A yoga rectangular bolster is also a good option to use for seated yoga positions and forward bends. They can also offer helpful support for various meditation poses.
Meditation Bolster Pillow
Meditation bolster pillows, also known as Zafus, are round cushions to sit on when meditating.
These pillows are designed to help keep your back straight while elevating your hips.
Most Zafus are round, but there are a few that are square or v-shaped.
Pranayama Bolster
A Pranayama bolster is similar to a rectangular bolster, but it is longer and thinner.
Pranayama bolsters can be used to provide a slight elevation for the chest.
They are also often selected to provide additional support and cushioning for kneeling positions or when performing a backbend.
How to Choose the Best Yoga Bolster for You
Since all yoga bolster pillows are different, there are a few important factors you’ll want to consider before making a purchase. I’ve compiled a list of the key features you should think about before selecting a yoga bolster to buy.
Size and Shape
One of the first things you should think about before choosing a yoga bolster is what size and shape you would like your bolster to be.
As I’ve described above, yoga bolsters come in a variety of styles and shapes (rectangular, circular, pranayama, and meditation pillows).
Think about how you’re planning to use it to help you determine which style is best for you.
You should also consider your height and weight when opting for a small or large yoga bolster.
Materials
Another important feature to pay attention to is the material of the bolster.
You will likely find that many yoga bolster covers are made using natural fabrics. These may include unbleached cotton or hemp.
You should also look at the material that is used to fill the bolster.
Polyester and foam are commonly used because they are lightweight and will help ensure the bolster does not lose its shape. Or you can choose a yoga bolster with buckwheat hull filling.
I personally recommend going for sustainable and eco-friendly materials, like organic cotton and buckwheat bolsters. An organic yoga bolster is not only better for the environment, but also for your skin and body.
In addition, be sure to consider how easy it will be to clean your bolster when it gets dirty before making a purchase.
Firmness
Firmness is another thing you’ll want to consider when choosing a bolster.
Ideally, your bolster should be firm enough that it will keep you stable and supported as you engage in different poses.
However, you also want the bolster to provide enough cushioning to keep you comfortable.
Style/Pattern
While your yoga bolster pattern or style won’t impact its performance, selecting a bolster that you find visually appealing may help you enjoy your yoga session just a bit more.
You might want to look for a bolster that has a fun pattern or one that coordinates with your yoga mat or workout gear.
Price
Finally, you may want to look at the cost of each of the products you are considering.
While price should not be the main deciding factor as cheap yoga bolsters are not always the best option, it is important to stay within your budget.
If you are trying to choose between two bolsters that you like, the cost of each item may help you make a final decision.

How to Use a Yoga Bolster
There is no one ‘right’ way of using a yoga bolster pillow.
In fact, one of the best things about this yoga accessory is all the different ways it can be used. The size and shape of the bolster you purchase will impact the different ways you will be able to use it.
Yoga bolster uses include providing support when positioning your body for different yoga poses, helping you get more relaxed, allowing you to open up your body, or softening a pose and helping you stay more comfortable.
There are many different yoga poses where a bolster can be very useful. I’ve highlighted a few of my favorite ones in the section below.
Restorative Yoga Poses with Bolster
You’ll likely find that a bolster can be a big help when performing different restorative or yin yoga poses. Practicing restorative yoga with a bolster also allows you to relax and enjoy your session a lot more.
Below, I’ve highlighted a few of my go-to yoga bolster poses and how to perform them. So here are some of my favorite restorative poses with a bolster that you can practice at home too:
Savasana
Savasana, also known as the final resting posture, is a pose designed to bring relaxation to both your body and your mind.
To perform this pose with a bolster, you’ll want to lie on your back with the bolster under your knees. Your legs and feet should be floating freely.
Once your body is in the proper position, breathe in deeply and relax on the exhale. Allow all of your muscles to relax, one by one, from your feet to your head.
Finally, quiet your mind and let your thoughts go away without paying too much attention to them.
Hold the position and focus on your breathing between 5 and 10 minutes, or for as long as you’d like.
Supported Child’s Pose
For this position, you’ll want to sit on your heels and have your big toes touch one another. Your knees should be about as far apart, or even slightly farther apart, as your hips are.
Once your knees and legs are positioned, place the bolster between your knees and lean forward over it. The bolster should be supporting your torso.
Turn your head to the side and place your arms over the sides of the bolster to allow them to rest on the ground.
Hold the position and rest for about 5 minutes.
Supported Backbend
Many people like to begin or end their yoga practice with this pose. It can help you open up your shoulders, abdomen, and chest, letting them stretch and relax.
To use your bolster for this pose, you’ll want to place the shorter end of the bolster so it lines up with your lower back. Lay your spine down along the length of the bolster with your neck and head on the other end of it (or another pillow if you are too tall).
Allow your arms to fall over the sides of the bolster and leave your palms open and facing up.
You should relax your shoulders and can choose to leave your legs in the butterfly pose or laying straight.
Supported Forward Fold
Also known as Paschimottanasana, a forward fold can help stretch and lengthen your muscles. Forward folds can also help eliminate stress or anxiety and provide the yogi with a calmer mind.
To perform this pose, you’ll want to sit with your legs out in front of you. Put your bolster on top of your legs, then lengthen your trunk.
Inhale deeply as you raise your arms up, and as you exhale, lay your chest down over your bolster.
Rest your head on either the side of your face or your forehead, whichever is most comfortable, close your eyes, and hold the position for about 5 minutes.
A bolster is an invaluable yoga accessory. It can provide much-needed assistance in achieving the correct position and help your body remain comfortable and relaxed.
This article covers everything you need to know to buy a yoga bolster that meets your needs and supports you through a variety of yoga poses.
