From my point of view, you can visit Terceira (or Lisbon, or Portugal, or Spain for that matter) without supporting or taking part in bullfighting. Just as you can visit Thailand or any country in Asia without supporting or taking part in elephant trekking, for example. Of course, at the end of the day, it's up to each individual to decide how and where they travel to. But that's for sure an important debate, so thank you for commenting :)

It is the only one with a powerful bullfighting industry, which is trying to expand to other islands, although without much success, except in Graciosa.
When I talk about the azores and recommend places to visit, I always mention this aspect, specially because I know most people I deal with are against this kind of practice. It's not pleasant arriving in an Island you think will be paradise and sudently you hear that a few days before, on that same village you're visiting, a bull was run over by a truck, which, aparently, was the only way to stop him from hurting people, when it escaped from the bullfight.
I think that avoiding these places and make them see that people would prefer to visit another island where animals are well treated, is a good way to reach the goal of ending these practices.

You're right about the bullfights, although unfortunately, Terceira is not the only Azores island where that happens. I hope one day they get completely banned.

A couple of weeks ago a friend retweeted your Portugal Off the Beaten Track. I didn't have time to do much more than glance but I retweeted it so I would be able to find you again. I'm in the process of moving to Tavira in the Algarve but once settled I need to turn my attention to a birthday treat. For years I've wanted to visit the Azores, and I plan to do it May/June next year. I shall be back looking for tips. :) :)
