Comino: How to Visit Malta’s Blue Lagoon

Planning a day or half-day trip to Malta’s Blue Lagoon? This article covers everything you need to know to visit the Maltese islands’ most famous natural attraction, from how to get there, to the best boat tours and things to do in Comino Island.

The Blue Lagoon is located in Comino, the smallest of the 3 inhabited islands of the Malta archipelago. With only 3 permanent residents, Comino is a natural wonder of pristine bays, amazing sea caves, and untouched landscapes.

But the most popular attraction in Comino Island is, of course, its Blue Lagoon, and for good reasons. This stunning inlet of turquoise waters surrounded by golden rocks and a small white sandy beach is nothing less than picture-perfect.

Yes, it can get crowded with tourists, especially in high season, but it’s still very much worth visiting in my opinion. And with a little bit of planning, you can even swim (almost) alone in this little slice of paradise.

So without further ado, here’s how to visit Comino’s Blue Lagoon and have a great time.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon, Malta:

Malta to Comino

Ferry: You can easily get from Malta to Comino by ferry from the Cirkewwa port in the north of the main island.

There are a couple of operators connecting Cirkewwa and the Blue Lagoon. I’ve used and recommend Ebsons Comino Ferries, which departs from Malta every hour on a daily basis all year round, and every half an hour during the summer months.

The trip from Cirkewwa to the Blue Lagoon takes around 15 minutes. On the return, you can also visit the natural caves of Comino or chose to be dropped off in Gozo instead of Malta.

Cruise tours: There are several companies offering cruise tours from Malta to Comino. These one-day Blue Lagoon boat trips usually depart from St Julians, Sliema or Bugibba and include food and drinks on board.

If you don’t want the hassle of organizing your trip to the Blue Lagoon and would rather just sit down and relax, then a group tour might be the right choice for you.

This one departs from Bugibba harbor and includes 4 hours at the Blue Lagoon, 1 hour at the Crystal Lagoon, and a visit to the sea caves.

Boat charters/private tours: Another option, if you’d like to avoid the crowds and get to the Blue Lagoon before anyone else, is to visit Comino on a private tour.

Boat charters give you more flexibility in terms of the time of departure and itinerary so you can make the most of your time, as well as the opportunity to see some secluded bays around Comino where big cruises won’t stop.

Self-drive private boat: Last but not least, if you’re feeling adventurous you can also rent a self-drive private boat for a half or full day and visit the Blue Lagoon and Comino Island on your own. You don’t need a license for this, but make sure to check the weather conditions and safety instructions beforehand.

Gozo to Blue Lagoon

If you’re short on time, it’s also possible to visit both Gozo and Comino on a day trip from Malta as I did.

Take an early ferry from Cirkewwa to Gozo and spend your morning and early afternoon exploring Malta’s sister island.

Then catch a speedboat from Gozo’s harbor to Comino Island and end your day on a perfect note with a swim in the Blue Lagoon.

Return to Malta by speedboat, including a visit to the amazing Comino Caves.

Or you can choose to visit Comino and the Blue Lagoon in the morning and explore Gozo in the afternoon.

Either way, you won’t be disappointed!

My Malta Blue Lagoon tour

After a day exploring the lovely island of Gozo, I took a Gozo to Comino Blue Lagoon and caves tour with Ebsons Comino Ferries. This was one of the highlights of my 5 days in Malta and I truly can’t recommend it enough!

We departed from Mgarr Harbor, in Gozo, onboard a speedboat bound for Malta’s Blue Lagoon. Here we had enough time to swim in the clear turquoise waters and soak in the sun and all the beauty of this natural bay.

Afterward, just when I thought this day couldn’t get any better, our skipper took us on a tour of the spectacular Comino coastline and sea caves.

We could also admire Comino’s unspoiled landscape as well as some of its landmarks, including Saint Mary’s Tower and Saint Mary’s Battery.

Tips for visiting Malta’s Blue Lagoon

– Visit off-season. As one of Malta’s most popular tourist attractions, the Blue Lagoon is better appreciated during the offseason, when there are fewer people around and the temperatures are more bearable. I’ve visited Malta and the Blue Lagoon in October and I’m so glad I did. I’ve got beach weather and warm seawater with half the crowds and lower prices.

– If you must visit in high season, get there early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when most of the big tour boats haven’t arrived yet (before 10 am) or are already gone (after 5 pm).

– There are a couple of food and drink stalls around the Blue Lagoon, but choices are limited and prices are touristy. If you’re planning to spend the day, make sure to pack some snacks and drinks.

– You can rent sunbeds and umbrellas at the Blue Lagoon but, again, these can be pricey. We spent only an hour at the Blue Lagoon, so decided to find a place on the rocks instead. However, if you’re visiting in high season and staying for the day, I’d recommend arriving early and getting an umbrella. Otherwise, you’ll spend the whole day in the sun as there’s virtually no shade anywhere.

– Only swim inside the buoys where boats are not allowed and avoid adventuring all the way to Cominotto (the small islet next to the Blue Lagoon) as currents can get strong especially offseason.

Other things to do in Comino

There are other things to do in Comino Island besides its main attraction. Here are a few suggestions if you’d like to venture off the beaten path:

Hiking or cycling around the island

Put your hiking shoes on or rent a bike at the Comino Hotel and set off to explore Comino’s 3,5 square kilometers.

With only 2 or 3 cars and no roads, Comino is a safe place for hikers and cyclers alike.

Although tiny, the island has several landmarks worthy of a visit, including:

Saint Mary’s Tower. You can climb to the top to enjoy the stunning views and visit its interior when the flag is flying.
Saint Mary’s Battery. Built by the Knights of St John in the 18^th century, it is also open to the public.
British Isolation Hospital. A reminder from the time Comino was used as a quarantine island.
Saint Mary’s Chapel. The island’s only chapel celebrates mass every Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

Snorkeling

Enjoy some swimming and snorkeling away from the crowds in the pristine waters of Saint Mary’s Bay, Saint Nichola’s Bay, or the Crystal Lagoon (accessible only by boat).

Diving

Comino is also famous for its diving sites, including the Santa Marija Caves and other spots around the island suitable for all levels of expertise.

You can book a diving excursion or take your first scuba dive with one of the many diving centers in Malta and Gozo.

Kayaking

Kayaking is another great way to explore Comino’s secluded bays and gorgeous sea caves.

Staying overnight

If you’d like to prolong your visit to Comino, the Comino Hotel offers 4-star accommodation in Saint Nichola’s Bay, as well as self-catered bungalows in Saint Mary’s Bay.

Gozo Day Trip: Best Things to Do in Gozo Island, Malta

Looking for the best things to do in Gozo, Malta in one day? This article covers everything you need to know, see, and do for a perfect day trip to Gozo.

The lovely island of Gozo surely exceeded all my expectations. I can honestly say the day I spent exploring the second-largest Maltese island was one of the most fun of my 5 days in Malta.

Think picturesque towns, unspoiled beaches, peaceful countryside, and spectacular landscapes. Gozo has it all, and more!

I could easily see myself spending a whole week here enjoying the slow pace of the island and its untouched feel.

But if one day in Gozo is all you have, it’s also possible to see many of its top attractions and have a great time. And you can even combine your day in Gozo with a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon, in Comino island, as I did.

So, without further ado, here’s what to do in Gozo in one day.

Admire the spectacular scenery of Dwejra Bay

Despite the collapse of the famous Azure Window in 2017, Dwejra Bay remains very much worth visiting for its unique and stunning natural scenery.

In fact, it was the first stop of my Gozo day trip and one of my favorites.

From here, you can also admire the impressive Inland Sea, a small but beautiful lagoon connected to the sea through a natural arch carved in the limestone.

The Inland Sea Tunnel is considered one of the most spectacular diving spots in the Mediterranean Sea, and even Jacques Costeau elected it as one of the best dives of his life.

If you’re not into diving, you can still go on a tour through the Inland Sea archway to the nearby Fungus Rock and the site where once stood the Azure Window in one of the small fishing boats you can find down on the beach.

Visit the megalithic Ggantija Temples

The Ggantija Temples in Gozo are the oldest of the Megalithic Temples of Malta, which include 5 other sites on the main island and are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built between 3600 and 3200 B.C, the 2 temples that constitute the Ggantija complex are also the second oldest megalithic temples in the whole world (after Göbekli Tepe in Turkey). This means they are even older than the famous Stonehenge in England or the pyramids of Egypt.

The Ggantija Temples were used for fertility rituals during the Neolithic and fell into disuse around 2500 B.C.

In the 19^th and 20^th centuries, archeological excavations brought them to light, and in the early 2000s the temples were restored and the whole area rehabilitated.

Today, the park includes an interpretation center where you can learn more about the Neolithic period in Malta and admire statues and other artifacts found here and on other sites.

Outside, the walkways will lead you inside the impressive megalithic temples.

Seeing these 5500-year-old stones with your own eyes is an experience not to be missed while in Gozo!

Relax at Ramla Bay

The unspoiled Ramla Bay is Gozo’s longest stretch of sand. And not just any sand but golden red sand!

Located in the north of the island, this beautiful beach is a sight for the eyes and a great place to relax, swim, snorkel or soak in the Mediterranean sun.

Although there are a couple of cafes on the beach, the whole surrounding area remains largely untouched by man and offers a peaceful atmosphere that can be hard to find on other Maltese beaches.

If you’re short on time or don’t feel like going to the beach, you can still admire it from above as I did.

Walk along the Xwejni Salt Pans

The Insta-famous Xwejni Salt Pans, on the north coast of the island, are one of Gozo’s most unique attractions.

But these 350-year-old and 3 kilometers long salt pans are more than just a scenic place. They’re the result of a long tradition passed down through generations and hard labor.

Dating back to the Phoenicians and Romans, Gozo salt pans benefit from the perfect combination of seawater, climate, and rocks at this location.

Walking along the Xwejni Salt Pans during the summer months, you can still see the locals harvesting the salt in this incredible rock-cut landscape.

And don’t forget to buy a packet or two of Gozo natural sea salt to savor back home.

Wander through the Citadel

Wandering through the narrow streets of the Citadel and admiring the panoramic views of the island was one of my favorite things to do in Gozo.

The Citadel is Gozo’s ancient fortified city. Standing proudly in a hill right in the center of the island, it has been the epicenter of life in Gozo since Neolithic times.

A walk along its impressive defensive walls, dating back to the medieval period, offers glorious views over the whole island.

Today, only a small number of families still live inside the Citadel. Over the years, most of the old houses and palaces have been restored and converted into shops, restaurants, cafés, and a remarkable number of museums.

History buffs will love the Museum of Archeology, the Folklore Museum, the Old Prison, and the World War II Shelters, to cite only a few of the many museums you can visit in the Citadel.

Dominating the main square, the beautiful Cathedral of Gozo is also worthy of a visit, as well as its museum located right next door.

Fun fact: This baroque-style Cathedral is the only one on the island that doesn’t have a dome but a painted flat ceiling emulating one.

Taste the local food at Ta’ Rikardu

Located inside Gozo’s Citadel, Ta’ Rikardu is a traditional Maltese restaurant and shop serving delicious local products in a typical and cozy atmosphere.

They also produce their own wine and cheese and offer milking and cheese-making tours on their farm.

I stopped for lunch here during my day in Gozo and was not disappointed.

I had one of their specialties – the Maltese ravioli with local cheese and tomato sauce – and, of course, the wine.

It was the perfect home-cooked-style meal after a morning of sightseeing!

If the weather is good, you can also sit outside on their terrace and enjoy your local meal with a view of the island.

Explore the capital city of Victoria

Outside the walls of the Citadel, you’ll find the lively capital city of Victoria.

Locals still call it by its old name Rabat, meaning suburb in Arabic and Archaic Maltese.

In fact, the city started to develop in the 15^th century as a suburb of the ancient Citadel. Today, it’s the largest city in Gozo and its social, commercial and cultural center.

Its bubbly atmosphere surely got me by surprise, especially for such a small island!

I strongly suggest taking your time to stroll around its narrow streets, browse the stores and markets, or sit in one of its squares for some people watching.

Victoria has also a vibrant cultural life, including not one but two opera houses, each one putting on at least one opera show a year.

Visit the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary

Located in an isolated area of Gozo’s countryside, the Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary is an oasis of peace and tranquility.

Even if you’re not a religious person, the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, considered an architectural masterpiece, is well worthy of a stop during your Gozo day trip.

The current shrine was built between 1920 and 1931, but the first records of the existence of a chapel on this site date back to the 16^th century.

In 1883, a local woman called Karmni Grima is said to have been walking near the church when she heard a voice calling her. She went inside the chapel and heard the voice coming from the image of the Blessed Virgin and asking her to pray three Hail Marys.

Over the years other miracles were attributed to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, gaining it the status of sanctuary and attracting many visitors and pilgrims.

Inside the basilica, you can admire magnificent sculptures, mosaics, and stained-glass windows.

But the most touching area, in my opinion, is the one dedicated to the ex-votos – a display of offerings to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu for the miracles granted to the devotees, from baby pictures and clothes to helmets and casts.

Outside, a series of marble statues representing the Way of the Cross run up the hill opposite the sanctuary.

Before you go, make sure to soak in the beautiful views all around you.

Enjoy the views from Nadur Belvedere

Speaking of views, if you’re looking for one of the best panoramas of the Malta archipelago, you absolutely need to stop at the Nadur Belvedere Point.

Located in the village of Nadur, not far from the Mgarr Harbor where the ferries stop, it offers spectacular views of Comino and the Blue Lagoon, all the way to the main island of Malta.

Take a speedboat to Comino’s Blue Lagoon

From Gozo’s harbor, you can easily take a speedboat to Comino and end your day swimming in the clear turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon.

The stunning Blue Lagoon is one of Malta’s top attractions – and justifiably so! – so don’t expect to be alone here though.

If you’d like to avoid the crowds, I recommend visiting in the off-season as I did, and if possible right in the morning or at the end of the afternoon when most of the big tour boats haven’t arrived yet or are already gone.

My speedboat trip with Ebsons Comino Ferries also included a half tour around the island of Comino to see some of its amazing caves and landscape. This was definitely the highlight of my day and I can’t recommend it enough!

Pro tip: For more convenience, after your tour of Comino you can choose to be dropped in Malta by speedboat instead of going back to Gozo and taking the ferry. Or vice-versa: if you choose to visit Comino and the Blue Lagoon in the morning, you can take the speedboat in Cirkewwa and then return from Gozo by ferry.

How to take a day trip to Gozo from Malta:

The cheapest way to get from Malta to Gozo is to take the ferry from Cirkewwa harbor in the northern part of the island. You can buy your ticket at the port terminal and the trip takes around 25 minutes.

To explore Gozo at your own pace and with maximum flexibility, I recommend renting a car and taking it with you on the ferry.

Or you can hire a driver for the day once you arrive in Gozo as I did. You’ll find many taxis and car rentals with driver for tours right at Mgarr Harbor.

Alternatively, you can book an organized day trip from Malta and enjoy a hassle-free day in Gozo. This Gozo full-day jeep tour includes all the highlights, lunch, and a powerboat ride back to Malta via the Blue Lagoon and the Comino caves.

Another option is to buy a day ticket to the Hop-On Hop-Off Gozo Sightseeing Bus departing from the harbor.

Lovely location in the Three Cities

For me, location plays a big role when choosing a place to stay.

Ideally, I like to stay in a central, but not too busy, area, from where I can easily get to all the attractions, as well as nice restaurants and cafés.

Located in a restored traditional building in Cospicua, in the historic Three Cities, Boco Boutique was the perfect base for my first visit to Malta!

The Three Cities (Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea) are 3 fortified cities with picturesque waterfront promenades and gorgeous views over the Grand Harbor of Valletta that you can admire from Boco’s rooftop terrace.

Made of narrow streets, colorful façades, traditional Maltese balconies, and a lovely waterfront, Cospicua is mostly a residential city offering you a peek into everyday life.

Just a short 5-minute walk from Boco Boutique, the charming city of Vittoriosa is the oldest of the Three Cities as well as the most visited.

There are many things to do here, including Malta Maritime Museum, Malta at War Museum, the Inquisitor’s Palace, and Fort St Angelo. I also recommend joining a walking tour of Vittoriosa to learn more about the city’s rich and fascinating history.

Finally, on the other side of the canal, Senglea with its scenic waterside promenade was my favorite of the Three Cities.

At walking distance from Boco Boutique, you also find a handful of great cafés and restaurants, like Cafe Rouge in Cospicua, Del Borgo Wine Bar & Eatery in Vittoriosa, and the award-winning Hammett’s Macina in Senglea, hands down the best place I’ve eaten at in Malta.

From Cospicua, you can easily reach Valletta by ferry or dghajsa, the typical Maltese gondola, in less than 10 minutes. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy some wonderful views along the way!

Definitely, a great off the beaten path base for exploring the Maltese islands, if you’re into culture, beautiful architecture, and delicious food.

A boutique hotel that feels like home

“Guests are welcome, but we may part as friends”. Boco’s motto is written right at its entrance door and, I must say, taken very seriously!

From the moment you walk in, the incredibly friendly and welcoming staff really makes you feel at home. So much so that when the time came to say goodbye, I couldn’t help but feel a little nostalgic.

It all starts with a very personalized check-in that includes an introduction to the hotel, tips on the best things to do and see in the Three Cities and Malta, and escort to your room.

But it continues throughout your stay with a genuine desire to cater to all your needs and make your experience a very pleasant one.

This 6-room boutique hotel is set in a beautiful 400-year-old Maltese townhouse that has been restored with incredibly good taste and attention to detail.

All the furniture in the hotel was upcycled by local craftsmen from materials found in the house and in other similar buildings.

Each room is uniquely decorated and displays original pieces of art especially designed by local artists.

And as if this place couldn’t get any better, on the third floor you can find the amazing penthouse lounge, with an honesty bar, outdoor hot tub, sun deck, and gorgeous views of the Three Cities and the Valletta Grand Harbour.

Of course, you can also expect all the usual and essential amenities for a comfortable stay, like AC, satellite TV and complimentary Wi-Fi in all rooms. Additional services include scooter and car hire, tailor-made tours, and airport transfer (at an extra cost).

Fun fact: The name Boco derives from the words ‘Bormla’ and ‘Cospicua’, (the city’s ancient and modern names, respectively), representing an encounter between past and present.

My room at Boco Boutique

I’ve stayed in a beautiful and spacious double room with yard on the ground floor.

The most important thing about any hotel room is, of course, the bed, which in this case was an authentic work of art, not to mention super comfy.

With an extra comfortable and anti-bacterial mattress, hypoallergenic fluffy pillows, and 100 percent cotton sheets, it was impossible not to sleep like a baby every night!

Featuring almost 30 square meters, my room also included an ensuite bathroom with shower and complimentary toiletries, mini-bar, and a lovely terrace with its own unique artwork – the Boco Man.

I really didn’t want to leave this place, so I asked about the possibility (or more like begged) for a late checkout and, luckily, was able to relax and enjoy my room for a couple more hours on my last day in Malta.

Late checkout is subject to availability, but they also have a luggage room if you need to store your bags for a few hours.

Delicious Maltese breakfast

Days at Boco Boutique start with a mouth-watering traditional Maltese breakfast prepared with fresh local products.

From a variety of bread, cakes, biscuits, and cereals, to local fruits, yogurts, cheese, and natural juices, this is exactly the kind of delicious and energizing food you need before a day of exploring.

I also tried and loved all the yummy local specialties, like the Bigilla (Maltese bean paste), the tuna dip, or the dried tomato dip.

They even serve a special of the day for breakfast, so you definitely won’t get bored (nor hungry!) at Boco Boutique.

While you eat, you can also admire the artworks on display in the breakfast room slash art gallery. Or have a chat with Rosa and Irina (the two super friendly and helpful ladies that operate the hotel) about your plans for the day.

And now for the prices.

Wondering what to do in Valletta, Malta? This article has got you covered for all the best things to do in Valletta in one day, from the top attractions and landmarks to the best museums, activities, and tours.

My 5 days in Malta, of course, had to include a visit to the beautiful capital of the country.

I tried to cover as much as possible of the Maltese islands, so I ended up spending only one day in Valletta.

This turned out to be just enough time to see and enjoy the tiny Maltese capital. Although I certainly wouldn’t have minded spending some extra days in this gem of a city!

Valletta was built in the 16^th century, when the Order of the Knights of St John, who ruled Malta at the time, ordered the construction of a new capital city for the country.

The Knights of Malta, led by the Grand Master La Valette, built a fortified city with a Renaissance urban plan, striking Baroque palaces, impressive churches, and great monuments.

Valletta’s rich history and architecture were recognized with the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

Walking through the streets of Valletta is like stepping back in time to an era of knights and castles.

But the capital of Malta is also a vibrant and young city where modern life happens.

So without further ado, here are the best things to see in Valletta in 1 day.

Take a dghajsa tour

My day exploring the Maltese capital started with a dghajsa ride between the Three Cities, where I’ve stayed, and the Grand Harbor of Valletta.

This is a great way to get to Valletta and admire the city from the water.

The dghajsa is the typical Maltese gondola, dating back to ancient times.

Today, only around a dozen of these original traditional boats survive. They are used as water taxis between Vittoriosa or Senglea, in the Three Cities, and Valletta, or for longer Grand Harbor sightseeing tours.

Enjoy the views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens

Once you get to the Valletta waterfront, take the lift up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Grand Harbor and the Three Cities.

Located on the highest point of Valletta’s city walls, the Upper Barrakka Gardens were originally built as a private garden for the Knights of St John.

Wandering around these pleasant gardens, you can find several monuments and sculptures, as well as a kiosk selling drinks.

Visit Valletta’s first church

From the Upper Barrakka Gardens, walk to the beautiful Castille Place, one of Valletta’s main squares.

Here you can’t miss the gorgeous Auberge de Castille.

A former auberge for the langue of Castile, León, and Portugal of the Knights of St John, this baroque-style palace is now the seat of the Prime-Minister of Malta.

Visits are not allowed, but you can still admire it from the outside.

Close by, you can visit the small but lovely Church of Our Lady of Victories.

Commissioned by the Grand Master La Valette itself, in the 16^th century, the Our Ladies of Victories Chapel was the first church and building of the new capital.

Its historic significance, as well as its beauty, makes it well worthy of a closer look.

Cross the Valletta City Gate

The next stop on your Valletta sightseeing itinerary is the City Gate.

As a fortified city, Valletta has seen a total of 5 gates on this same spot over the centuries.

The current, modern gate, built between 2011 and 2014, was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano as part of a larger renovation project for the area that included the new Parliament building and the rehabilitation of the Royal Opera House ruins.

Outside the Valletta City Gate, you can also admire the modernist Triton Fountain.

Admire Malta’s new parliament building

Malta’s Parliament House is a spectacular modern building designed by Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 2015 in Freedom Square, near the City Gate.

This contemporary work of architecture has spawned controversy, as it’s often the case with modern projects everywhere, but I personally loved it.

Right next to the new parliament building, you find the Pjazza Teatru Rjal or Royal Theatre Square.

Here, the ruins of the old Royal Opera House, which was severely bombed during World War II, were converted by Renzo Piano into an open-air theatre.

The square is especially beautiful when lit at night.

Watch the Saluting Battery Ceremony

Before noon, head back to the Upper Barrakka Gardens to watch the Saluting Battery Ceremony.

The ceremony starts at 12 sharp, but make sure to come at least 20 minutes before to get a good spot as it can get very crowded.

The Saluting Battery Ceremony takes place at the lower tier of St. Peter & Paul Bastion, beneath the gardens viewing gallery.

Valletta’s Saluting Battery dates back to the 16^th century and was used for military and ceremonial purposes like state events or religious festivities, as well as to signal the hour.

Today, the ceremony is one of Valletta’s top attractions.

I’ve watched it for free from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, but it’s also possible to buy tickets to the Saluting Battery platform here, if you’d like to see it from a little closer.

Have lunch at MUZA

For lunch, I recommend the Malta Art Museum restaurant, right in the center of the city.

Besides the beautiful setting of the interior terrace, I absolutely loved their art-inspired menu.

I had the beef tagliata and my boyfriend the rabbit, the national Maltese dish. Both were delicious and exquisitely presented!

Join a Valletta walking tour

In the afternoon, I recommend taking a walking tour to learn more about the city’s history and its most important landmarks.

Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral

The huge and impressive St John’s Co-Cathedral was built between 1572 and 1577 as the new conventual church of the Knights of St John.

Do not be fooled by its modest outward appearance.

Its high Baroque interior, redecorated in the 17^th century, is considered one of the finest in Europe and is surely one of the most extraordinary I’ve ever seen!

The Knights intended to build a majestic cathedral inspired by St Peter’s Basilica, in the Vatican, and really spared no means to do so.

Today, the church shares the title of cathedral and seat of the Bishop of Malta with St Paul’s Cathedral, the first cathedral of the country located in the old capital Mdina.

Surprisingly, St John’s Co-Cathedral is also home to the only 2 signed Caravaggio masterpieces in the world.

The famous Italian artist fled to Malta in 1606, after allegedly murdering a man in Rome. He lived on the island for a short period, during which he painted several works of art commissioned by the Knights of St John.

The most significant of these works are the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Jerome Writing, both of which are on display at St John’s Co-Cathedral and are the only signed paintings by the artist.

In 2020, the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation plans to inaugurate a new Caravaggio Wing dedicated to the relationship of the Italian master with Malta and the history of the 2 paintings.

Explore the museums

Spend the rest of the day exploring some of the many Valletta museums.

I suggest choosing a maximum of 1 or 2 museums from the list below, so you have enough time to appreciate your visit.

Here are some of the best museums in the Maltese capital:

Casa Rocca Piccola

Casa Rocca Piccola is one of the last private lived-in palaces in Valletta today.

This 16th-century palace has been home to the Maltese noble family De Piro for more than 200 years.

The house is now open to the public, offering daily guided tours of many of the living areas, including 2 World War II bomb shelters.

I must say this was not the most spectacular or best-preserved palace I’ve ever visited though.

Despite some incredible pieces of furniture and works of art, most of the house looks like it could use some renovation.

Grand Master’s Palace

Built between the 16^th and 18^th centuries, the Grand Master’s Palace was, as its name suggests, the official residence of the grandmasters of the Knights of Malta.

Later, under the British, it became the Governor’s Palace. Today, it serves as the seat of the President of Malta. It was also used as the House of the Parliament until the construction of the new parliament building.

The State Rooms and Armory are open to the public and display a rich collection of works of art and one of the largest armories in the world.

As the office of the Maltese President, some of the State Rooms may be occasionally closed. Unfortunately for me, that was the case during my time in Malta, so I ended up not seeing this palace. But it’s certainly on my list for a next visit.

MUZA National Museum of Art

Malta’s new National Museum of Art, or MUZA for short, was inaugurated in 2018, under Valletta’s year as European Capital of Culture.

Set in a historic palace in the center of the Maltese capital, this modern and interactive museum displays a significant collection of visual artworks, from old masters like Mattia Preti to contemporary Maltese artists like Antonio Sciortino.

National Museum of Archeology

History buffs can’t miss the National Museum of Archeology’s impressive collection of prehistoric artifacts found on Malta’s megalithic temples and other prehistoric locations around the country.

The museum is housed at the Auberge de Provence, a beautiful baroque-style palace in the center of Valletta.

National War Museum & Fort St Elmo

One of the most visited museums in Malta, the National War Museum is located inside the historic Fort St Elmo, which is worthy of a visit in its own right.

The museum tells the military history of Malta from the Bronze Age to World War II and, more recently, the country’s entry into the European Union.

Stroll along Republic and Merchant Streets

End your day with a stroll along Republic Street and Merchant Street, the 2 main commercial arteries in Valletta and a paradise for foodies and shoppers alike.

The pedestrian Republic Street is Valletta’s main street and one of the liveliest in the city.

Along almost 1 kilometer, stretching from the City Gate to Fort St Elmo, you can find some of the most important landmarks and squares in the Maltese capital, as well as many shops, street vendors, restaurants, and cafés.

Running parallel to the main artery, Merchant Street is a great place to shop for souvenirs or have dinner in one of its many alfresco restaurants.

Enjoy Valletta’s nightlife

After dinner, explore Valletta’s eclectic nightlife.

A former red-light district during the British presence on the island, Strait Street is the oldest and most famous nightlife hub in the capital of Malta.

Today, Strait Street is still home to many bars, restaurants, and live music.

But new pubs, cafés, and wine or jazz bars are popping up all around the city.

On my last evening in Malta, we had a drink at St Lucy Street, one of the most picturesque streets in Valletta, with a handful of cool, laid-back bars.

Wondering what to do in Malta for wellness and culture? This 5 days in Malta itinerary covers everything you need to know to make the most of your time in the Maltese islands, from the top places to visit and things to see in Malta, to the best restaurants, where to stay, and pro travel tips for a relaxing and cultural trip.

Malta is like no other country I’ve ever visited before.

For starters, it’s super tiny but highly populated. Malta is the 10^th smallest country in the world and the 5^th most densely populated. The result is interesting, to say the least.

Due to its location in the Mediterranean Sea and its long and rich history that dates back to 5900 BC, Malta is also a melting pot of cultures and influences, from the North of Africa to the Middle East, from the Greeks, Romans, and Arabs, to the Knights of St John and the British.

These influences are still very present everywhere you look: in the architecture, the delicious food (which was one of the best surprises of my trip!), the language, and the traditions.

Then there’s the beautiful natural scenery, the turquoise Mediterranean waters, and the wonderful climate.

No wonder so many expats are choosing the Maltese islands to settle down, and tourism is the main economic activity these days.

I spent 5 days exploring Malta, Gozo, and Comino. It was just enough to cover all the major attractions, practice yoga, relax on the beach, and fall in love with the Maltese archipelago.

So without further ado, here’s a perfect Malta 5 day itinerary and travel guide to help you plan your own visit.

When to visit Malta

I visited the Maltese islands in October and highly recommend it as the perfect month to travel to Malta.

Not only did I get fabulous weather and warm seawater, but I also avoided the crowds and the higher prices of the peak season.

During summer, temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees and all the popular spots are overflowing with tourists, so I would skip July and August if you don’t like the heat and the crowds.

Early fall is a great time of the year to visit Malta, as well as late spring. Although, if you’d like to swim in warm sea waters, fall would still be your best option.

Besides, if you’re looking to be a more sustainable traveler, visiting off-season allows you to support tourism-based economies throughout the year and to minimize your environmental impact.

Where to stay in Malta

With so many different and interesting areas around the islands, choosing where to stay in Malta can definitely be overwhelming.

I’ve stayed at Boco Boutique, a small boutique hotel in the Three Cities, and absolutely loved it!

The Three Cities (Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea) are 3 fortified cities with picturesque waterfront promenades and gorgeous views over the Grand Harbor of Valletta.

Just a short (and beautiful!) 8-minute ferry ride from the Maltese capital, this is the perfect base for your first visit to Malta if you’d like to stay close to all the action but still enjoy some peace and quiet.

The whole area is very charming and there’s also great dining choices in all of the 3 cities.

Boco Boutique is set in a refurbished historic building in Cospicua, with stunning views of the Three Cities and Valletta.

But what makes this place so special, in my opinion, is the incredibly friendly and welcoming staff that makes you feel at home since the moment you walk in.

This stylish boutique hotel offers only 6 rooms, all uniquely decorated, so make sure to book in advance though.

How to get around Malta

As I’ve said, Malta is a small but highly populated country, so traffic can be a problem sometimes. Getting from one place to another can often get longer than expected, so you’ll need to factor this into your travel plans.

That being said, there are many ways to efficiently get around the Maltese islands, from public transportation to car rentals, taxis, ridesharing apps like eCabs and Bolt, or organized tours.

If you’re following this 5-day Malta itinerary, you’ll probably only need to take the ferries for the first 2 days.

A couple of times in the evening I’ve also used Bolt, which is cheaper than regular taxis or eCabs.

For the other 3 days, I’d recommend renting a car so you can explore further away and at your own rhythm and take the car with you on the ferry to Gozo.

Just remember that in Malta you drive on the left side of the road.

If that’s something you won’t be comfortable with, you can always join a tour, take the public bus or the Malta Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, or hire a private driver for the day.

Malta itinerary

Day 1: The Three Cities (Cospicua, Vittoriosa, and Senglea)

Spend your first day in Malta exploring the Three Cities.

This is the perfect place to learn about Malta’s history, while at the same time feeling its authentic day to day life.

Start at Vittoriosa, still called by its ancient name Birgu by the locals and the oldest of these 3 historic cities.

Birgu was declared the capital of Malta (replacing Mdina) by the Order of Saint John, who ruled the country from the 16^th century to the end of the 18^th century.

Later, the same Knights of Malta would establish the other 2 of the Three Cities: Cospicua and Senglea.

The city of Birgu played an important role in the Great Siege of Malta, in the 16^th century, when the Knights of Saint John, with the help of a few hundred Maltese men, women, and children, although greatly outnumbered were able to defeat the invading forces of the Ottoman Empire.

Older than the current capital Valletta, the Three Cities were built on hills and surrounded by defensive walls to protect them from attacks.

Today, from Birgu you can admire lovely views over these historic cities, the Vittoriosa Marina and the canals, all the way to the Grand Harbor of Valletta.

I did a tour of Vittoriosa and highly recommend it if you’d like to learn more about the history of the Three Cities and Malta itself.

In Vittoriosa, there are also several museums you can visit, including the Malta Maritime Museum, the Malta at War Museum, the Inquisitor’s Palace, and Fort St Angelo.

After exploring Birgu, head down to Cospicua.

Get lost in its narrow, colorful streets, admire the typical Maltese balconies, and stroll along its beautiful waterfront.

Finally, cross the small bridge over the canal to Senglea.

Senglea’s picturesque waterside promenade was my favorite area in the Three Cities.

Filled with alfresco cafés and restaurants, it offers great views of Vittoriosa and Cospicua, as well of Valletta.

Where to eat

Hammett’s Macina

We stumbled upon this place by chance and decided to give it a try. It ended up being the best meal we had in Malta!

I had the open lasagna with Maltese octopus and the pork belly, and my boyfriend the local cured guanciale and the beef ribeye.

Everything was so delicious that this was easily one of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at in a long time.

Later we found out, this place is actually run by a famous, award-winning Maltese chef, Chris Hammett, so no wonder.

Hammett Macina is located in Senglea and, trust me, a mandatory place to eat at in Malta.

Del Borgo

Another excellent place to eat in the Three Cities, Del Borgo is a restaurant, wine bar, and café serving traditional Maltese food with a modern touch.

I really like the food here, as well as the atmosphere.

Fun fact: the restaurant is located in an old palace in Vittoriosa where was once the cellar of the Prince of Wales’ band club.

Day 2: Valletta, Sliema and St Julian’s

Dedicate the second day of your Malta itinerary to Valletta, the capital of the country.

From the Three Cities, you can easily get to Valletta by ferry or take a dghajsa, the typical Maltese gondola. The latter costs you only 50 cents more and allows for more flexibility timewise – you just need to find a free one and hop on board.

Either way, you’ll get to enjoy some lovely views along the way that alone would justify staying in the Three Cities. I’ve tried the ferry and the dghajsa and loved both experiences!

Valletta is a small city, in fact, it is the smallest capital of the European Union, and thus easy to explore in a day.

Built by the Order of Saint John in the 16^th century, the city is one of Malta’s 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Some of the best things to see and do in Valletta are:

– admire the panoramic views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Saluting Battery ceremony;

– take a Valletta walking tour including the impressive St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where you can find the only signed Caravaggio masterpiece in the world;

– visit Casa Rocca Piccola, a typical Maltese living palace from the 16^th century.

At the end of the afternoon, take the ferry to Sliema from Marsamxett, Valletta’s second port.

As one of the largest Maltese cities, Sliema is a modern and busy place with many high buildings dominating the skyline.

The Sliema Front promenade is a popular meeting point and nice for a walk, but to be honest this was not my favorite place in Malta.

I very much preferred the area around St Julian’s Bay, especially the romantic Spinola Bay. This is a really nice place to come in the evening and have dinner in one of the many waterfront restaurants.

You can easily walk from Sliema to St Julian’s and along St Julian’s Bay to Spinola Bay.

If you like to party, St Julian’s is also known for its nightlife, with Paceville being the main hub for clubs and bars.

Where to eat

MUZA Restaurant

In our day exploring Valletta, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Malta Art Museum restaurant, right in the center of the city.

Besides the beautiful setting of the interior terrace, I loved the art-inspired menu.

I had beef tagliata and my boyfriend the rabbit, the national Maltese dish.

Both dishes were exquisitely cooked, and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Highly recommended!

Day 3: Mdina and Rabat

For your third day in Malta, take a day trip to Mdina and Rabat, in the center of the island.

The fortified city of Mdina was the first capital of the country during the Middle Ages.

It is known as the Silent City due to the fact that many of its former inhabitants, mostly noble families, have moved away to the new capital Valletta in the 16^th century.

Today less than 300 people live in Mdina, which makes the city very quiet, especially after sunset.

Wandering around its car-free streets and squares you can feel the peaceful and undisturbed atmosphere.

Worth visiting here are St Paul’s Cathedral, which remains the seat of the Catholic Church in Malta, the National Museum of Natural History, located in the beautiful Vilhena Palace, and the city walls, which offer panoramic views of Malta’s countryside.

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’d also recognize some of the series’ first season filming locations, starting right at the Mdina Gate (which was the entrance to King’s Landing in episode 3) and Mesquita Square (where was the door to Littlefinger’s Brothel in episodes 3 and 5).

Die-hard fans can also join this Game of Thrones tour to see all the several filming locations around the country. I must confess I’m not a big fan myself, but if you are this does sound like a lot of fun.

After exploring Mdina, walk to the nearby town of Rabat, which was the suburb of the old capital (Rabat means ‘suburb’ in Arabic).

One of the most famous sites here is the Catacombs of St Paul, a complex of underground Roman cemeteries.

According to tradition, St Paul himself was shipwrecked in Malta in 60 AD and converted the island to Christianity.

End your day at the nearby Dingli Cliffs, the highest point on the Maltese islands at 250 meters above sea level.

I didn’t have time to visit the Dingli Cliffs, but the scenery and sunset here are supposed to be breathtaking.

Where to eat

Crystal Palace (Tas-Serkin)

You can’t possibly visit Malta without trying the pastizzi, a traditional local pastry stuffed with ricotta cheese or mushy peas.

The most famous pastizzi in Malta can be found at Crystal Palace (Tas-Serkin), in Rabat. We tried the ricotta ones and they were sure delicious!

Enjoying a pastizzi at Crystal Palace is also an authentic local experience. This small café has been open for over a century and is a true Maltese institution.

Day 4: Gozo and Comino

Day 4 of your Malta itinerary is all about Gozo and Comino.

The Malta archipelago is made up of 7 islands, from which only 3 are inhabited: Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

Gozo is the second-largest island and a popular vacation destination among the Maltese themselves.

It does have a more relaxed and rural feel to it, while still offering plenty of things to do and see.

Wake up early and take the ferry from Cirkewwa to Gozo. You can buy your ticket at the port terminal and the trip takes around 25 minutes.

If you have a car, I suggest taking it with you on the ferry. If not, you can hire a driver once you arrive in Gozo, or book an organized tour of Gozo from Malta here.

Some of the best things to see in Gozo are the impressive Megalithic Ggantija Temples classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the picturesque capital city of Victoria, and the Citadel with its stunning views of the island.

In the afternoon, take a boat tour from Gozo to Comino and back to Malta.

Comino is the smallest of the 3 inhabited islands, with only 3 permanent residents.

The island’s main attraction is, of course, the stunning Blue Lagoon, an idyllic bay of pristine turquoise waters, white sand, and golden rocks.

This is also one of Malta’s most popular places with tourists. I was here in October and it was still pretty busy.

But I guarantee you not even the crowds can take away from the beauty of this place.

Comino boat tours usually also include a trip around the island to see Comino’s amazing caves and landscape. For me, this was the highlight of the day and I can’t recommend it enough!

Where to eat

Ta’ Rikardu

Located in Gozo’s Citadel, Ta’ Rikardu is a traditional Maltese restaurant and shop serving delicious local products in a typical and cozy atmosphere.

They also produce their own wine and cheese and offer milking and cheese-making tours on their farm.

We had lunch here during our day in Gozo and were not disappointed.

We tried one of their specialties – the Maltese ravioli with local cheese and tomato sauce – and, of course, the wine.

It was the perfect home-cooked-style meal after a morning of sightseeing.

Day 5: SUP Yoga, Mellieha Bay, and Marsaxlokk

Spend your last day in Malta relaxing by the Mediterranean Sea.

I suggest starting your morning off on the right note with a SUP Yoga class in St Julian’s Bay.

Whether you’re an advanced yogi or a beginner, this is a fantastic way to energize your body and relax your mind.

This was my second time trying SUP Yoga and I absolutely loved it. In fact, it was one of my favorite activities in Malta.

Then head to the north of the island and spend the rest of your day indulging on the beach at Mellieha Bay.

Ghadira Bay (as it’s also known) is Malta’s largest sandy beach, and one of the most beautiful.

With crystal clear turquoise water and white sand, Mellieha Bay is, not surprisingly, the most popular beach on the island.

But if you’re visiting off-season as I did, it’s nothing less than paradise!

Near Ghadira Bay, you can also visit the equally popular Popeye Village, which is a fun alternative for kids or for your inner kid, if lying down on the beach all day isn’t exactly your thing.

For your last evening in Malta, head to the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk.

Marsaxlokk is the biggest fishing harbor in Malta and famous for the luzzus, the traditional Maltese fishing boats painted in bright colors and with a pair of eyes to protect the fishermen at sea.

Besides admiring the luzzus, another mandatory thing to do in Marsaxlokk is, of course, to eat some local, fresh fish.

Marsaxlokk harbor is home to some of the best fish restaurants on the island – check out my personal recommendation below – and the perfect setting for your last dinner in Malta.

Where to eat

Munchies Bistro & Lido

Located right on the beach at Ghadira Bay, Munchies offers seriously delicious food and fantastic views.

We had a very nice lunch here overlooking the beach. We started with the bruschettas and then shared the fish of the day, which name I forgot but that was really yummy.

Downstairs, they also have a cool beach café over the water and a lido, where, after lunch, we’ve rented some sunchairs and spent a chilled-out afternoon.

Capo Mulini

We enjoyed our last dinner in Malta at Capo Mulini, in the beautiful Marsaxlokk harbor.

Rated as one of the best restaurants in Marsaxlokk, this place ticks all the boxes: wonderful food, excellent service, and a great setting.

Local fresh fish is, of course, the specialty here, but they also serve pizza, pasta or meat.
